How Is Tipton Different From Other Schools?

  • Tipton Academy is a small all boy school that focuses on each student as an individual with needs and abilities different from everyone else. This means that each student is able to see his full potential and not just the potential of others. TA is dedicated to helping each student understand himself and his behavior more effectively so he is able to learn from others and become a positive member of the family and society. TA focuses to help the entire family with our very own Parent Seminars that are offered three to four times a year.

Is Tipton A Licensed Facility?

  • Yes. TA is licensed by the State of Kansas as a Residential Center for children and youth. We abide by the state regulations associated with this type of facility.

What If My Son Doesnt Want To Be Enrolled?

  • We accept students at the request of their parents. In other words your child does not have to be willing to come. We work with several transport services that will pick up your son from your home if he is unwilling to come on here on his own.

How Long Is The Program

  • The program at TA is six phases which are comprised of behavioral and task objectives. The best results come from a longer and more extensive program, generally 9-12 months. The length of time to program completion is determined by the student's attitude, willingness to learn, and progress in the program. TA focuses on the individual growth of each student and their needs not a predetermined length of program.

When Can My Child Be Enrolled?

  • TA enrolls students year round. Usually the enrollment process is very simple and very fast. When you are ready, we are ready.

What Is The Student To Staff Ratio?

  • The student to staff ratio at TA is 1 staff to 7 students during the day and 1 staff to 10 students at night. TA is not a lock down school but our students are monitored 24 hours a day.

Can My Son Run Away From Tipton Academy?

  • While it is possible for a student to run from the school, we minimize the possibilities by having supervision 24 hours a day. Our remote location also helps reduce the number of students who attempt to run away.

What Types Of Behavioral Issues Do You Deal With?

  • We enroll students with a variety of issues. Many of our students have issues with low self esteem, academics, defiance, running away and emotions management. We also work effectively with students who have displayed or experienced behaviors around drugs and alcohol, food, self injury or a disregard for personal safety and the safety of others. We find that students who live with a lack of integrity and purpose, often believe that nobody can understand them and have a difficult time learning from others and respecting authority.

Do You Take Students Who Need Medication?

  • Yes. TA accepts students who are on a variety of medications. Medication management can be set up through local doctors and mental health professionals.

Where Is Tipton Located? Is There Transportation Available?

  • We are located in a small town called Tipton. It is located in north central Kansas’s Rolling Blue Hills region.

Can I Visit Tipton Before Enrolling My Son?

  • We are always ready to show you the school and have you talk with our students and staff.

What Are The Qualifications Of The Staff

  • TA works to have the best staff to help your child. Each staff goes through specific and continued training detailed to their job. Tipton Academy staff must pass a background check in the state of Kansas to be eligible for employment.

When And How Many Times Can I Visit My Son?

  • We have an open door policy and help to guide you through visitations. First visits are best when your son has moved to the second phase of the program (typically 2-3 months). Visits are most productive when there is time in between them for the students to work on the issues that arose during the visit and develop more skills to help them, no more than one visit a month helps to facilitate family healing.

When And How Often Can I Communicate With My Son?

  • Your first phone call with your child will be set up between you and your Parent Communicator. Phone call length and frequency are set up according to the phase your son is currently participating in.

Who Else Can Communicate With My Son?

  • When your son enters the program you will communicate with staff to determine appropriate contacts for him. The only people that know he is enrolled at TA will be the people you tell.

How Much Are We As Parents Invovled In The Program?

  • Parents are a very important piece to entire family healing. We encourage family visits as soon as your son reaches the appropriate phase. Through contact with staff you will help to develop goals and achievements for your son. We offer three to four Parent Seminars each year to help in the process of family healing.

Are There Other Parents In The Program I Can Talk To?

  • Upon request we will make available a list of parents for you to contact. We also offer an Online Parent Community Bulletin Board, when your son is enrolled at Tipton Academy, for you to have direct and personal contact with other academy parents and families.

What Is Your Success Rate?

  • Every student who attends TA is prepared to be successful in their future life adventures. All students leave with the tools necessary to be highly effective and happy human beings. Our results rate is extremely high. Our program graduates become outstanding college students, employees, and military service men and family members. Many reach previously insurmountable goals and dreams such as becoming National Merit Scholarship finalists and receiving Academic Honors and advanced placement in college or military opportunities. Our younger students successfully re-enter the traditional or private junior or senior high school setting.
